How to avoid scams as an international student

You have just arrived and do not know the local rules yet. That is exactly what some people count on.

International students can be easy targets for certain scams, because they have just arrived and do not know the local rules yet. A few simple habits help a lot.

Be careful with accommodation

Avoid sending large amounts to people you do not know without checking who is offering the property and on what terms. Be especially suspicious of offers well below the normal price.

Be careful with jobs that sound too easy

Promises of a lot of money for little work deserve attention. Never hand over documents or bank details without understanding who you are dealing with.

Protect your documents

You will need your passport at various moments, but that does not mean anyone has the right to keep it. Keep digital copies of anything important.

Do not act under pressure

Scammers create urgency: you have to pay now, this is your last chance, if you do not transfer today you lose everything. When you feel pressure, stop and check.

You will meet plenty of people willing to help. Just keep using the same common sense you would use at home.

Still choosing your school?

Tell us the course, the destination and the budget you are looking for. Accredited schools can send you offers to compare. You compare, and you choose.
